SPELL is a gold open access publication of the Swiss Association of University Teachers of English (SAUTE), established in 1984 and devoted to publishing cutting-edge research in English and American Studies from the Middle Ages to the Present.

Volumes are thematic and usually emerge from conferences such as the biennial symposia organized by SAUTE and its American or medieval and early modern sub-sections. Decisions concerning topics and editors are made by the Annual General Meeting of SAUTE two years before the year of publication. Scholars wishing to publish in SPELL are advised to check these topics and conferences and submit a proposal to the respective organizers.

Volumes of SPELL contain carefully selected papers devoted to a topic of literary, linguistic and – broadly – cultural interest. All contributions are original and peer-reviewed. Articles are usually by participants at the conferences mentioned, but the volume editors are free to accept or solicit further contributions.
